Not all signals of interest are periodic. We may examine this aperiodic signals by treating them as periodic, and extending the period to positive and negative infinity. When we do this, we come up with the Fourier Transform.
The summation becomes an integral, and instead of discrete coefficients, we now have a function of frequency.
