If we look at polar representation, we see that the time shift result in a Linear function of phase. All time shifts of signals result in linear phase functions.
Note that the magnitude is completely unaffected.
For this reason, most times, when people look at a Fourier transform of a signal, they primarily look at the magnitude plot.
