Shifting a signal in time results in a applying a linear phase function in the frequency domain.

Linear phase functions in the frequency domain determine when a signal starts and stops in time.

Since it becomes cumbersome to examine linear phase functions in the frequency domain, most of the time, we will be concerned with magnitudes (and not phase) in the frequency domain.
